Athens, GA – Senator Raphael Warnock visited the University of Georgia on October 12th, where he spent time with TRIO students and staff at the Division of Academic Enhancement. Warnock, a TRIO alum himself, spoke to students from TRIO McNair, Student Support Services, and Upward Bound programs about the importance of perseverance and the magic of TRIO programs. His experience in the Upward Bound program at Savannah State University brought him to a college campus and showed him what was possible for his future.
Students chosen to meet Warnock included Zianya Solis, Kelli Crews, Lacey Tucker, and Samaiyah Ra’aid. Zianya Solis stated, “”It was honestly an unforgettable experience, and I am super grateful for the opportunity to meet Senator Warnock.” In addition to chatting with staff and students, Warnock also toured DAE’s peer tutoring spaces and academic coaching spaces where TRIO students receive support throughout the semester.
TRIO programs have been at the University of Georgia since 1980 and supports students across northeast Georgia as well as at the University. The overarching purpose of TRIO is to provide access to individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. TRIO contributes significantly to UGA’s commitment to excellence in a teaching/learning environment dedicated to serving a diverse and well-prepared student body, to promoting high levels of student achievement, and to providing appropriate academic support services.
“Senator Warnock is an inspiration to students and is a proud TRIO alum who understands the importance of access for all students,” stated Sherontae Maxwell, assistant director for access within the DAE. “His visit made a difference to our students and to everyone that serves underserved populations.”
