On February 9th, 30 Division of Academic Enhancement scholars attended a production of “Hamilton” at the Fox Theater in downtown Atlanta. Originally performed on Broadway in 2015, Hamilton “follows the rise of founding father, Alexander Hamilton, as he fights for honor, love, and a legacy that shape the course of a nation. Based on Ron Chernow’s acclaimed biography and set to a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, R&B, and Broadway, the musical has had a profound impact on culture, politics, and education. (Fox Theater)”.
The initiative for this trip was led by Coca-Cola First Generation staff, with the intention of exposing students to an experience that would increase their social and cultural capital, by way of facilitating relationships with their fellow scholars and cultivating an appreciation for the fine arts. For many students, this was their first time seeing a musical or visiting the Fox.
The trip was met with enthusiasm from scholars who are always ready to engage in an opportunity to better themselves and achieve at the highest levels. One scholar stated, “The trip was amazing! I had so much fun. As I have a low income family it was my first time ever at the Fox and I never would’ve thought I’d be able to see Hamilton. Thank you for everything!”
This event was supported by the DAE Initiatives team which includes staff who support Coca-Cola First Generation, Correll, Cousins, Georgia Commitment Scholarship, and ALL Georgia. The team is looking forward to planning more events like this in the future to fuel the drive of their students to always achieve more.
