New resource for practicing public speaking opens in Miller Learning Center

Whether it’s presenting in class, preparing for a job interview or simply building confidence speaking in front of others, University of Georgia students now have a new place to practice: the Presentation Collaboratory.

The space combines the latest technology with personalized support to help students strengthen their communications skills.

Students can visit the Presentation Collaboratory for support at any stage of the public speaking process, from brainstorming ideas to practicing their delivery. The service is especially helpful for students who are nervous about speaking in public or want to grow their confidence with presenting.

“Public speaking is one of the most valuable skills students can develop, and the Presentation Collaboratory offers a space to practice, receive feedback, and build confidence,” said Cara Winston-Simmons, director of the Office for Student Success and Achievement, which oversees the space.

Using virtual reality, students can simulate a public speaking environment, whether it’s a small classroom, auditorium, or boardroom. Students can practice their speech and get real-time advice powered by AI, including feedback on eye contact, body language, and use of filler words. The VR software also offers practice for one-on-one conversations, like job interviews, debating, and customer service interactions.

In addition to VR, students can make a one-on-one appointment with a consultant and get help tailored to their goals. During an appointment, students decide what they want to work on, and consultants provide feedback and encouragement.

The Presentation Collaboratory is part of the new Creative Engagement Wing on the third floor of the Miller Learning Center, which also includes a makerspace, digital media lab, podcast studio and more.

Students can book an appointment at presentations.uga.edu, or drop in to use the VR headsets. For questions, email [email protected]
