The Office of Active Learning invites students to join the inaugural cohort of Peer Academic Coaches to support academic success across campus. Peer Academic Coaches meet with one-on-one and in small groups with students to discuss academic success skills and strategies and to work together to set goals and create action plans. Peer Academic Coaches also promote academic success by hosting accountability groups, leading workshops, and promoting Active Learning across campus. 

Pay

Peer Academic Coaches are paid $12/hour and receive course credit for the UNIV 1204: Preparing for Peer Learning and experiential learning credit (depending on school/college). 

Peer Academic Coach Responsibilities 

  • Provide individualized coaching to students on effective study techniques, including note-taking, reading strategies, active learning, and exam preparation.  
  • Assist students with time management, planning, organization, and goal setting.  
  • Support students in developing motivation, accountability, and academic persistence.  
  • Help students navigate the transition to college and life at UGA.  
  • Coach students on effective communication within the college environment, including interacting with faculty and utilizing office hours and campus resources.  
  • Facilitate personalized coaching sessions tailored to students’ individual experiences, perspectives, goals, and academic needs.  
  • Recognize when a student’s needs extend beyond the scope of peer coaching and make appropriate referrals to campus resources.  
  • Participate in initial and ongoing training and professional development opportunities.  
  • Work collaboratively with Office of Active Learning staff and fellow Peer Academic Coaches to support student success. 

Job Requirements: 

  • Enroll in and complete UNIV 1204: Preparing for Peer Learning (a one-hour institutional credit course) within your first semester of being a Peer Academic Coach (unless you have already completed UNIV 1204) 
  • Work 5-13 hours per week 
  • Maintain eligibility requirements established by the Office of Active Learning throughout employment. 

To Qualify to become a Peer Academic Coach You Must: 

  • Demonstrate academic excellence 
  • Have completed at least two semesters of classes at UGA 
  • Possess strong interpersonal, communication, and active listening skills.  
  • Demonstrate the ability to motivate, support, and collaborate effectively with peers.  
  • Exhibit strong academic success skills, including organization, study strategies, time management, and self-management.  
  • Be able to maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and appropriate boundaries when working with students.  
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
